Athens GA Bankruptcy Lawyer – Georgia Attorneyv

Every Chapter 7 debtor must attend a meeting of the creditors. The meeting must be convened by the Trustee within a reasonable time after the filing of the bankruptcy petition. The debtor must make available to the trustee, a copy of his or her federal income tax return for the most recent year before the filing at least 7 days before the meeting. A creditor may request a copy of the tax return subject to procedures established by the Administrative Office of the Courts for safeguarding the confidentiality of the tax information. The debtor must prove his identity at the meeting by producing a photo ID. If the debtor does not bring a proper photo ID, the meeting will be adjourned and the debtor must send a written notice to all creditors of the adjourned date (for which the debtor usually will be charged an additional fee). Although the meeting is called a meeting of creditors, most creditors generally do not attend these meetings. Even it they attend, they rarely question the debtor. Generally the trustee conducts the questioning of the debtor. The questioning session lasts for less than 5 minutes. The meeting is closed by the trustee at the end of questioning.
